“C2 Flanker Task” is an iOS app to experience the effects of the Flanker Task.
It can be used on iPhone and iPad with iOS 13 or above.
The iOS app “C2 Flanker Task” records the response time of a Flanker Task (Ericksen Flanker Task, task conflict) in milliseconds.
Response time is the time from when an task is displayed to when you touchdown the answer button.
The data can be output as a CSV file and read by a spreadsheet application such as Excel.
In addition to the orthodox Flanker Task, you can also change the color, the brightness of the background, the shape of the arrow, etc. to check the effect.
※ The effect of the Flanker Task appears, for example, as the difference between the time to recognize the direction of the central arrow of →→→→→ and the time to recognize the direction of the central arrow of ←← → ←←.
The “C2 Flanker Task” supports landscape mode as well as portrait mode, but here we will use only portrait mode images.
If you tap the “Start” button on the startup screen, the Flanker Task will be displayed after the 3-2-1 countdown.
If you answer the direction of the arrow in the center, the next task will be displayed.
When you answer the number of tasks, the number of correct answers and the average response time are displayed, and the process ends. (At this time, you can leave a memo if necessary.)
You can graph detailed information about response time by tapping the i button at the top right of the end view. Tap (or pan on) the graph to see the corresponding nth response time at the top.
Tap the settings button at the bottom left of the startup screen to display the settings screen.
Number of tasks (N) is the number of flanker tasks that are given consecutively. It can be set in the range of 5 to 30.
The initial value is 10.
The arrow can be selected from four types of shapes.
The initial value is ‘>’.
To add a pattern, tap the round light blue “+” button.
For circles other than the center circle, tap to switch between “match” and “unmatch”.
If you select anything other than “none” in the animation, the Flanker Task is set to move left, right, up, down.
To edit a pattern, select the pattern you want to edit.
Tap the “edit” button that appears when you select the pattern.
For circles other than the center circle, tap to switch between “match” and “unmatch”.
If you select anything other than “none” in the animation, the Flanker Task is set to move left, right, up, down.
To delete a pattern, swipe left on the cell of the pattern you want to delete.
Tap the “Delete” button to delete the pattern.
* The last pattern cannot be deleted.
There are “In Order” and “Randomly” in the pattern order.
In Order:The registered patterns will appear in order from the top. (Patterns registered in excess of the number of tasks N will not be displayed)
Randomly:It will appear randomly from the registered patterns.
When the “Coloring” switch is turned on, tasks will be colored randomly.
When you turn on the “Dark” switch, the background of the task turns black.
When you turn on the “Shuffle Answer Buttons” switch, the answer buttons will be swapped randomly.
When answering, you will hear a sound indicating a correct or incorrect answer. To mute sounds, put your iPad or iPhone in mute mode. You can also mute by tapping the speaker button at the bottom of the startup screen.
To check the response time data, tap the graph button at the bottom right of the startup screen.
Tap (or pan on) the graph to see the corresponding nth response time at the top.
【Contents】
1st line: Number of correct answers / number of tasks (N), average and standard deviation of response time [sec]
e.g.:correct:7/8 avg.:2.307 SD:0.280
2nd line: start time, note
e.g.:2022-06-17 15:44 notenotenotenote
3rd line: Arrow shape, option
e.g.:→ coloring dark shuffled
* The optional “Coloring” indicates that the task was randomly colored and displayed.
*The optional “Dark” indicates that the background of the task is displayed in black.
*The optional “shuffled” indicates that the answer buttons have been randomly swapped.
From the 4th line: For each task display, the pattern actually set, the type of animation (_: none R: move right L: move left, U: move up D: move down), result (◯: correct answer ●: Incorrect answer), response time [sec]
e.g.:>><>>_◯1.970 >><>>_◯2.668 <<><<_◯2.062 >><>>_◯2.380 >><>>_●2.735 >><>>_◯1.980 <<><<_◯2.449 >><>>_◯2.211
To output the data as a CSV file, tap the “output data” button at the bottom left of the data screen.
There are three types of data output: L, M, and S. Select L, M, or S from the action sheet to output a CSV file.
The output CSV file can be operated from the “Files” app.
The following table shows the CSV file opened in Excel on a Mac. The CSV file was sent to the Mac with the “Files” app.
